Finding a Sacred Space, 2021

Acrylic & Ink on Canvas
Inspired By:
Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Center &
The Brian Woodruff Sextet
During my first visit to Jamaica Bay, there were meditations posted along the hiking trails that I cleaned. The meditations focused on mindfulness, the practice of being fully present in the moment, aware of all senses and sensations without being overwhelmed by them. The explorations in mindfulness seemed the perfect accompaniment to the album A Centering Peace, by The Brian Woodruff Sextet.
As I hiked through the marshes and shorelines of this beautiful national park, I was reminded to feel tall and connected to the earth with each step, and to be kind to myself. I was inspired by the cattails, porcelain berries, extensive wildlife and vibrant greens of the park, and wanted to capture their essence, while also expressing the wide variety of rhythm and tempo found on A Centering Peace.
Brian helped me investigate the roots of my work by sharing his own foundations of philosophy and spirituality. We talked about the importance of creating a sacred space where you can truly feel free to express yourself artistically. As a native of Rhode Island, the Ocean State, the beach is definitely one of my sacred spaces. I’ve always had a deep love and appreciation for the ocean; I see myself as one of its stewards. I try to leave every beach cleaner than when I arrived.
After all, it’s home.
